The Contribution of 16 European Think Tanks to the Polish, Danish, and Cypriot Trio Presidency of the European Union

 

On June 15, the Report "The Contribution of 16 European Think Tanks to the Polish, Danish, and Cypriot Trio Presidency of the European Union" will be presented in Brussels. The Report consists of working papers and recommendations by 16 European Think Tanks which constitute the Think Global - Act European Network. The Report has been edited by Elvire Fabry from the coordinating institution Notre Europe along with Pawel Swieboda, Fabrizio Tassinari and Andreas Theophanous from think tanks in the Trio-Presidency member states.

 

The Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs has been participating in the network over the past 12 months. The network has already submitted papers at the Spanish, Belgian and Hungarian Trio Presidency of the European Union. The Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs has already submitted three working papers, namely: a) European Monetary and Fiscal Policy Revisited, b) EU Integration and the Prospect of Further Enlargement: The Case of Turkey και and c) Immigration and the Demographic Challenge in Europe.

The event will be addressed by the President of Notre Europe, and former Commissioner, Antonio Vitorino and key recommendations of the Report will be presented by its Senior Research Fellow Elvire Fabry.

 

The presentation will consist of two parts: The first session is entitled " Lisbon Treaty rules in a time of crisis: stress tests for European governance. The vision of the rotating presidencies”. This section will be chaired by Mr. Philippe de Schoutheete, Member of the Board of Directors, of the EGMONT Belgian Royal Institute and the speakers will be: Mr. Mikotaj Dowgielewicz, Polish Secretary of State for European Affairs and Economic Policy, Mr. Claus Grube, Permanent Secretary of State at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Nicholas Emiliou, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, and Mr. Pierre Vimont, Executive Secretary General of the European External Action Service.

 

The second session is entitled "Prospects for European Growth and Implications for the EU Policies". This section will be chaired by Mr. Pawel Swieboda, President of the demosEuropa Center and the speakers will be: Mr. Michael Claus, Director General of European Affairs of the German Federal Foreign Office, Mr. Mario Draghi, Governor of the Bank of Italy, Mr. Jonathan Faull, Director General for Internal Market and Services of the European Commission and Mr. Alain Lamassoure, Chairman of the Committee on Budgets, of the European Parliament.

 

Concluding remarks will be submitted by Professor Andreas Theophanous, Director of the Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs, and by Fabrizio Tassinary, Head of the Research Unit for Foreign Policy and EU studies, Danish Institute for International Studies.

 

The co-organizers of the event are from three countries representing the Trio Presidency of the European Union in the next eighteen months, demosEUROPA - Centre for European Strategy from Poland, the Danish Institute for International Studies from Denmark and the Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs, from Cyprus, and the French Institute Notre Europe with the Belgian Royal Institute for International Relations, EGMONT.
