EU calls for citizens to share their Pan European work experience

The EU has launched a new website www.tellusyourstory.EU, to encourage citizens to share their stories of working and living abroad across the different countries in Europe. With feedback expected from hundreds of individuals across Europe, the aim is to influence the decisions on the future of the Single Market. This should encourage better economic collaboration, standardised rules and reduce the practical barriers to work in other countries in the EU.

The five individuals with the most interesting and striking stories will be invited to the Single Market Forum in Kraków, Poland on 2nd – 4th October where they will be able to participate in a film testimony to be shown at the conference.

So if you have faced cross-border challenges, which have been inconvenient in both personal or business life, the EU is calling for you to: 'Tell us your story!'.

On another note, if you have received the support you needed, the EU also want to know. Some challenges that could be the subject of a story:

o   Validation of my diploma and credentials in another European country

o   My national insurance security when going to live abroad

o   Obtaining my pension after I moved abroad

o   Obtaining a residence permit in country

o   Preventing  'double taxation' when working in another country

o   Setting up my business abroad

o   Cross-border on-line shopping in Europe

NOTES TO EDITORS

The European Commission, the European Parliament and the future Polish Presidency of the Council have organised this competition. Stories will be accepted until 24 June, when the jury will select the 5 winning stories.

Abstention = 21.3%*

* Counting into the equation the abstention level the real strength of the parties is: DISY 25.1%, AKEL 23.9%, DIKO 11.5%, EDEK 6.5%, EYROKO 2.8%, Greens 1.6%

This was never going to be a ‘critical’ election contest regardless of the rhetoric of the political parties during the campaign; it was considered important in terms of ‘messages’ aimed at setting the foundations for the more crucial February 2013 presidential elections. In terms of party shifts it can be said that not much has changed bar the less than expected loss of support for DIKO and EYROKO who have however lost a substantial part of their representation in the House (DIKO lost 2 out of 11 seats and EYROKO 1 out of 3). What is remarkable – for Cyprus’ standards – is that the level of abstention reached 21.3% an unprecedented figure for national elections, almost double that of 2006. In practical terms the most important element of the day after is that the AKEL-DIKO coalition does not have a majority in the House of Representatives (it was 29 and it is now a combined 28 seats out of the 56). The second is that nothing much has changed in terms of the mapping of the political spectrum. DIKO and EDEK remain important factors of the so-called center and will again determine the outcome of the 2013 presidential elections.

New goal needed to shake off tarnished image

Monday, 21 February 2005 21:38

Cyprus can shake off its tarnished image. But it needs a new goal and the discipline to achieve it. (First appeared in the Intercollege's In Depth Bulletin, Volume 2, Issue 1).

Walter Mondale, the failed Democratic candidate for the presidential elections of 1984, once described political image like mixing cement.

Comment - France realises more Member States mean less EU

By Nicholas Karides

EVERYBODY knew that Turkey's candidacy would divide the European Union. But nobody had thought it would destabilise the Union's integration process well before it actually joined the group. It is happening already, as early as six months before Turkey begins accession negotiations.

Sloppiness all round: Jack Straw's visit to Cyprus

Friday, 24 February 2006 14:30

The Comment appeared in the Cyprus Mail on 8 February 2006

In an interview with John Humphrys on BBC Radio 4 on 1 February Foreign Secretary Jack Straw was asked to comment on George Bush’s tough words against Iran in his state of the union address. Among other things, Straw said that one had to bear in mind the different psychology of the US when dealing with Iran and pointed to the indelible mark left in the US psyche from the siege of the US embassy in Tehran in 1979.

13/09/06 Does Europe mean business?

Wednesday, 13 September 2006 06:52

In his speech at the Financial Times debate 'Does Europe really mean business?' on Tuesday in Brussels, José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission spoke of the relevance of the Commission in preparing the EU for the global challenges, claiming that the future will not go away; indeed, he said it would come at us even faster than we expect. Though he overstated the EU's role in the world he did speak one truth: He said 'Look at the facts before you listen to the comment'. Two facts he omitted however are that EU citizens are tired of EU institutions and that EU leaders seem, simply, tired. So its not so much whether Europe really means business but whether Europe has the leaders to do the business.

HATS OFF 20 September

Thursday, 21 September 2006 17:16

HATS OFF: We havent seen An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore's documentary on global warming, but if the man who calls himself the guy that used to be the next president of the United States is capable of stirring such a positive debate, certainly he deserves the chance to sort out Iran's uranium enrichment programme let alone Iraq and Afghanistan. Hats off for his remark: "Political will is a renewable resource''.

Parallel of the week

Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:41

PARALLEL OF THE WEEK: Gideon Rachman writing in the Financial Times said stress on Turkey's potential instability vis a vis the prospect of its accession is for the member states akin to telling a man "Your fiancee is on the point of madness, you must marry her immediately or she will have a nervous breakdown"

Greeks were first to come up with the big answers

Tuesday, 11 September 2007 10:41

Comment appeared in the Financial Times August 11 2007

Sir, It was interesting to see that Justin Marozzi ("Democracy in action", Life & Arts, August 4/5) assumes that Greeks "couldn't give a hoot" about their history. The recent very heated debate both in Greece and Cyprus about the accuracy of the content of an elementary school history book points to the contrary.
