About Us

Nicholas Karides
Nicholas set up ampersand in 2004. Until then he had served as Head of the Press and Information Section and Spokesman of the Delegation of the European Commission in Nicosia and was responsible for the elaboration and implementation of the Enlargement Communication Strategy for Cyprus. Before that he was the London correspondent of the Cyprus Weekly and the Cyprus News Agency, having also worked as production editor for Thomson International’s IFR magazines in London. Between 2000-2004 he lectured on European Affairs at the Cyprus Academy of Public Administration. In 2005, with Andreas Hadjikyriacos, he set up Newswatch Media Monitoring, a subsidiary of ampersand and Gnora Media Consultants. In 2007, he, Andreas and Pambos Kaskanis founded Offsite, a daily e-newspaper, the success of which resulted in 2009 in the three being awarded the MAN Magazine and Johnnie Walker Man of the Year Award for Electronic Media Journalism. Nicholas is a frequent contributor to a range of Greek and English language newspapers and holds a Tennis Coach Grade Certificate from the UK’s Modern Tennis International Academy.

Kyriakos Demetriou
Kyriakos joined ampersand in June 2007, where he assumed the duties of Head Media Reviewer and back-up Editor for Media Reviews, and is the resident IT expert. Between 2007 and 2009 he was a frequent contributor to Offsite daily e-newspaper. He holds a degree in International Relations from Boston University with a concentration in Foreign Policy and Security Studies and is a candidate for an MA degree in International Relations from the University of Nicosia. During his studies in Boston he participated in Model United Nations meetings at Boston University as an advisor on strategy and held the position of Director of Activities for the Boston University Hellenic Association.

Maria-Christina Doulami
Maria-Christina joined ampersand in March 2011. Before that she worked as an intern at the European Commission Representation in Greece. She has obtained a Bachelor's degree in European Studies and Modern Languages from the University of Manchester, as well as a Master's degree in Journalism Studies from Cardiff University. During the four-year BA degree she also had the opportunity to study in Italy as an Erasmus student for a year. She has briefly worked for the Cyprus Mail, as well as for a regional paper in Cardiff. She has a particular interest in languages and speaks Greek, English, Italian, French and Spanish, as well as some German.

Oya Gürel 

Oya Gürel has been an associate of ampersand since April 2011. She has worked for many years in the field of press and communication at institutional and political level having also served as reporter, editor and editor-in-chief of several Turkish Cypriot newspapers. She studied architecture in Ankara at Gazi University. Apart from Turkish, she is fluent in English.

Yiannis Trimithiotis 
Yiannis joined ampersand in mid-November 2011. Before that, he worked as a Press attaché at the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in London. He holds a Bachelor degree in Political Science with a minor degree in Sociology from the University of Cyprus and a Master’s degree in Social and Political Thought from the University of Warwick.  Apart from Greek, he speaks English and French and is currently learning Turkish.
