The European Commission is organizing a Diversity Day as part of its campaign in EU capital cities against discrimination in an effort to raise public awareness on the rights and obligations deriving from European discrimination laws and to promote the benefits of diversity in local societies. Parallel of the weekPARALLEL OF THE WEEK: Gideon Rachman writing in the Financial Times said stress on Turkey's potential instability vis a vis the prospect of its accession is for the member states akin to telling a man "Your fiancee is on the point of madness, you must marry her immediately or she will have a nervous breakdown" See www.ft.com HATS OFF 20 SeptemberHATS OFF: We havent seen An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore's documentary on global warming, but if the man who calls himself the guy that used to be the next president of the United States is capable of stirring such a positive debate, certainly he deserves the chance to sort out Iran's uranium enrichment programme let alone Iraq and Afghanistan. Hats off for his remark: "Political will is a renewable resource''. 13/09/06 Does Europe mean business? In his speech at the Financial Times debate 'Does Europe really mean business?' on Tuesday in Brussels, José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission spoke of the relevance of the Commission in preparing the EU for the global challenges, claiming that the future will not go away; indeed, he said it would come at us even faster than we expect. Though he overstated the EU's role in the world he did speak one truth: He said 'Look at the facts before you listen to the comment'. Two facts he omitted however are that EU citizens are tired of EU institutions and that EU leaders seem, simply, tired. So its not so much whether Europe really means business but whether Europe has the leaders to do the business.
